PRICE IMPROVEMENT! Built in 1898, this Arts and Crafts Tudor Style house boasts a rich history as one of the first homes built on Lookout Mountain's eastern brow. Richard L. Watkins, owner of Lookout Mountain Company, developed the mountain and chose this location as the site for his home. He commissioned architect Dan C. Reamer to design it and enhance the luxury of stunning views: The river, the valley, distant mountains, and today, the sparkling lights of Chattanooga. Reamer's firm was best noted for creating Yellowstone's Old Faithful Inn. The house is perfectly oriented on approximately .75 acre with a lovely multilevel back yard, lush gardens, and impressive rock formations that lead to hidden stairs and access to a surprise bluff-side retreat with its rock formations on the edge of the mountain's escarpment that reveal even more expansive views towards the north and down the length of Chattanooga Valley. Behind mature landscaping, the shaded, covered Front Porch commands attention from every passerby. The interior is a visual feast: As you move from room-to-room, you will be immersed in period finishes along with wonderful built-ins updated seamlessly over recent years. The main level has spacious rooms, beautiful quarter-sawn oak floors, original windows and transoms, and vertical panel doors. You enter the house through a thick, arched, oak door to begin your tour. The Reception Room is graciously large and anchored by a center table under a period crystal chandelier. A seating area in front of the large window alcove opposes the main staircase (one of the two in the house). Directly beyond is the formal Dining Room with a wood burning fireplace framed by a monolithic, period, hand-carved limestone mantel and impressive Gilded Age crystal chandelier. Arched French doors open into a small ell-shaped extension of the Living Room. From the Dining Room, the large framed opening leads into the cherry panel, wainscoted Living Room which has integrated the old summer porch to take advantage of the brow views and create a multi-functional salon. The cherry paneling curves over the yellow-glazed brick facing of the arched fireplace. Windows and French doors with antique floated panes and transoms create three walls which fill the rooms with abundant natural light. Sitting in this cantilevered illusion, you see "Seven States" and the incredible displays of nature's splendor. From the hallway leading to the Kitchen are the Powder Room, Butler's Pantry and conveniently situated elevator. The original Butler's Pantry was modified with style adapted glass front cabinets and wet bar, and leads to the small entry/mudroom, service stairs and covered Front Porch. In the Kitchen, unique and rare "Red Granite" countertops accentuate Shaker style cabinets. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, gas range with double ovens, dishwasher and the whimsical, custom Guards Red "Cat-in-the-Hat" hood. Beyond the Kitchen is command central, AKA Breakfast/Laundry, from which sliding doors open to a glass railed Deck and two bay Garage. Moving on to the upper floor, one's greeted at the top of the stairs by a glass built-in, lighted vitrine. An antiquated feature of the original house was the large open Sleeping Porch across the eastern (back) side. This is evidenced by updated windows which long ago replaced the screened openings. The views are breath taking and the "Tree House" sitting room appears to rest within the branches of an ancient Oak. The Master Bedroom Suite offers a sitting area in front of the fireplace with its 18th Century hand-carved pine Georgian mantel piece. Hidden through a doorway at the end of the room is an intimate Study/Office with custom library shelving and commanding views of the river, the city and beyond to Lake Chickamauga.
